Walkway Renewal: Breathing New Life Into Outdoor Spaces
Come along with us as we bring new life to an old walkway,
elevating the path to a beautiful home!
Step 1: Grading and Excavation
Every great project starts with proper preparation, and the Philips project was no different. We began by analyzing the grade points to determine the appropriate heights and slopes for the walkway. Using a mini skid steer, we carefully excavated the old walkway, removing the existing pavers and digging down to the depth required for the new base. This clean slate allowed us to ensure proper foundation and drainage, critical for the longevity of any hardscape.
Step 2: Concrete Overlay on the Step
With the groundwork complete, we turned our attention to the existing concrete step. To overlay the concrete, we first made sure the surface was clean to promote adhesion between the new pavers and the old concrete. We laid the border blocks around the step, securing them with adhesive. After the adhesive dried, we added a layer of woven geotextile fabric, followed by 1/8" chip stone to create a stable, level surface for the new pavers. Careful attention was given to ensure the new step was level but also pitched slightly to direct water away from the house.
Step 3: Landing Step Preparation
Next, we focused on the landing area just below the step. We began by compacting the soil, followed by the placement of geotextile fabric for added strength. A six-inch layer of 3/4" clean stone provided a solid base for the Techo-Bloc Rocka step units. After ensuring these step units were level and locked in place, we added more stone and chip stone to form the bedding layer for the Newline Grand Flagstone pieces. These large flagstones gave the landing a natural and elegant look.
Step 4: Walkway Construction
The real transformation began with the walkway itself. As with all our projects, we started by excavating the area to the proper depth and compacting the soil. A six-inch layer of 3/4" clean stone was compacted to create a strong foundation. Next, we added a one-inch bedding layer to accommodate the Newline pavers, carefully laying each one to ensure a uniform surface.
Once the main pavers were in place, we cut the pavers to make room for the Techo-Bloc Villagio border, which added a beautiful finishing touch to the walkway. After placing the border blocks, we mixed and applied PermaEdge, a concrete edge restraint that provides decades of stability.
