Building Projects: One Step at a Time

We took this historical building's old, deteriorating step and transformed it into a welcoming pathway for all who visit. Preserving the past while building for the future—one step at a time.

New, upgraded step area

Step 1: Site Preparation

Before we could begin the transformation, we needed to remove the existing step. This meant carefully disassembling and ripping out the old structure to make way for the new design.

The next crucial step was determining the exact heights where the new steps would land. For this project, we set our “Zero” point at the step into the building, ensuring a constant reference throughout the construction.

We also took this opportunity to plan for future needs by running piping under the step. This allows for the easy installation of water or power lines later, without disturbing the new structure.

Step 2: Building the New Step

With the site prepped, we began by excavating the area to the proper grade, ensuring there was enough space for a 6-inch base of 3/4-inch clean stone and a 1-inch layer of Rice Stone.

To construct the step, we used retaining wall blocks, carefully gluing each one in place for added stability. Once the retaining wall blocks were set at the proper grade, we filled the interior space with clean stone and screeded a layer of Rice Stone over the top.

Next, it was time to lay the pavers. We carefully placed them inside the prepared area, making any necessary cuts for a perfect fit. After the main pavers were installed, we added a border block around the step, securing it to the retaining wall blocks with glue.

Step 3: Completing the Landing Area

With the main step in place, we shifted our focus to the landing area below. We graded this area to the correct height using clean stone and Rice Stone, ensuring a smooth, level surface. The pavers were then laid to match the step, with any necessary cuts made for a seamless look.

To finish the landing area, we installed border pavers in a contrasting color to create an eye-catching edge.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

To ensure longevity and stability, we applied Perma Edge, a concrete edge restraint that outperforms traditional plastic edging. After allowing the Perma Edge to cure overnight, we filled the joints between the pavers with polymeric sand, which hardens to lock everything in place.

With the final adjustments made and the area cleaned up, the transformation was complete—a new, stunning step that not only enhances the entrance but is built to last.
